Why Is the Standard Indian Diet Causing Diabetes

Read Now

Diabetes has grown 10 fold in the last 40 years. Why is this ?

I have examined our diet and these are some key observations I have found:
By far the biggest challenge with Indian diet is that people are eating too many carbohydrates.
O
ur food is made up of fat protein and carbohydrates and Indians are typically eating way too much of carbohydrates.

Let me give you an example. Aloo Is a carbohydrate, Wheat or gehu is a carbohydrate, and all our daal's and lentils are carbohydrates. So if you are having a dinner with  aloo ki subji, daal and roti; all you are having is carbohydrate. Completely.

Very very often we are having at least one daal and one rice or roti. So it is very normal for 2/3 of our meal to be carbohydrates.
And let’s face it we all love aloo

if you want to reduce your carbohydrate intake you can add some spinach to your daal or lauki to your daal. Instead of normal rice consider cauliflower rice. The other thing you should do is to try to add green vegetables to every meal Replace the aloo with a non-starchy vegetable Eat Gobi, patta gobi, eat spinach, eat karela eat baingan, eat bhindi. Why? because starch is also a carbohydrate.

The other culprit in our standard indian diet is fat.

Contrary to many opinions who will talk about eating lowfat or no fat, our bodies need fat. We need fat to survive, we need fat to lubricate our joints, we need fat for our nervous system. However today we are eating all types of fats and many of them are really really bad fats.

In many restaurants the food is constantly reheated. This leads to the creation of trans fats, something which is foreign to our body and we get swelling at a genetic level. Ok, you get swelling at a genetic, DNA level.

There is also something to be said about the quality of fat. When you open a package of packaged foods, like potato chips or Bujia The quality of the fat is really very poor. Together with the fact that most of us don’t exercise enough the accumulation of these bad quality ingredients is harmful to our body. These bad fats are called transfats and saturated fats.

Finally let me talk about raw vegetables.

See in most of our ingredients the vitamins the phytochemicals are at their maximum in the uncooked form. But today most of us barely eat enough salad. You should be eating 250 g of raw vegetables a day but most of us are barely over 50 g. Due to this we are getting a shortage of phytochemicals and fiber in our diet.

So these are some of the reasons why people are falling sick.

What can you do to avoid getting sick and how can this video help you.

1. Try to eat all types of vegetables.
2.
Try to eat dark colored vegetables, they get their color because they’re rich with something good for you.
3.
Minimize the consumption of starchy vegetables. Starch is carbohydrates and we are eating too many carbs. Cut or eliminate potato.
4.
Eat some salad every day; this will add up.
5. H
ave some fresh juice every day specially vegetable juices; this is in addition to your salad.
6.
Avoid packaged foods. we can teach you how to make snacks right here.

Just following this a few simple steps and doing them every day will bring a permanent change in your body

Following these 6 steps will help you avoid diabetes

Optimizing Gut Health : Experiments In Fermentation

I have a close friend who cannot handle drinking vegetable juices. After years of taking anti-biotics for various problems, she simply could not process these. Her “biome” was shot. Her gut bacteria were not complete.
This got me into research about this. I really wanted her to drink vegetable juices for her health. Turns out there is a lot of research about the health of your gut, also in a holistic way called your “biome”. If you want to be healty you need a healthy biome.
Fermented foods are extremely rich in pro-biotics. Saurkraut, kimchi, kombucha and more will all help you restore your gut bacteria. It will build your immunity.
So today we started experiments in fermentation. The goal is to be able to make sure people have a healthy gut as part of being a healthy person. This will allow proper digestion of all the nutrients from the food you eat.
Making Saurkraut at home. Kneading cabbage for the first time.
I was eager to get started. So I started right away this morning.
I ended up making 3 different types, which will be ready in 3-5 days. I also got my kids involved which was nice, as there is no fire involved.

Lets see how these turn out in 3 days :)

In a recent article in BBC.com I saw the above map of global Cancer cases. Looks a lot like a map of global GDP ! Look how Kenya is higher than its neighbors as is South Africa. See South Korea or tiny Singapore ? Israel is higher than its neighbors and Egypt higher than most of its !
My theory is : the more developed an economy, the more people are eating processed foods, or foods from a box. In poor countries people eat natural food, they cannot afford food which comes in a box, or fast food, or microwaves.
So my advice to you : eat natural foods. Avoid eating things that come in a box or a can. Avoid fast food. The cheapest food for lunch is not a good choice !
Similarly for my diabetic friends : eat natural and unprocessed foods. It will go a long way in helping you. The diabetics are usually the rich too!

Ughh,,, today I at some really bad food that looked like this
Picture
What do you do when you have just gone to try a new restaurant where everything that you've ordered shows up looking like this, just floating in oil and cream ?
I can see one source of much of the fats in Indians' bellies, it is the type of Mughlai foods we all grew up eating. I remember eating dishes like these, with dum aloo, daal makhani and butter naan. Yum!; but no more ..... We have a diabetes explosion. Boom !
So how did we compensate after at the 21 Gun Salute :
Since this lunch, at dinner we eat mostly live foods, tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, with hummus and some gluten free bread (can substitute with whole grain or whole wheat bread). The emphasis of this article is that in managin disease through food you have to PLAN your food; but you still need to live a life and if you end up going to a bad place you have to remember to make up for the bad food you just ate.
I do feel better now and I have learnt what to order next time I end up at such a place (kababs). Some notes if you have to eat there :
1) We skipped as much of the gravy as possible at the restaurant
2) We were eating Pudina Parathas which were whole wheat versus the white flour in naan.

See the sick skinny artery in "A" and see it again in "B" after some time.
Wow ! Talk about preventing a heart attack or a "cardiovascular event" !!
Many of my readers may wonder and want to know where I am getting my ideas from. I am sharing a guru here who is inspiring my ideas, just a short video clip below.
The professor is such a Stud he is on stage with Deepak Chopra and decides to do his speech holding his small baby in his hands !
Later below, see him from 1990's talking about the same thing on Oprah. From what I am learning, the fact that we can beat diabetes, reverse heart disease etc. is not even considered "debatable" science any more. It is a proven fact.

THESE VIDEOS DON'T PLAY ON MOBILES.

I am reading from 7+ doctors of equal stature who all believe we can cure diabetes and heart disease. The CHALLENGE as always, is in the Execution. This is where I hope I can make the impact.
If you felt this blog post lacked depth feel free to Google "Dean Ornish" and you can spend hours learning his work. Unfortunately I cannot summarize his 32 years of work into this small post. It is awesome knowledge so I'd encourage you to try if you're thinking about learning more.

Just saw this and though I would mention it to all people trying to lose weight.

FYI : My belief is that Exercise is not so important to lose weight; your diet is WAY MORE important. But it is important to exercise for an all-purpose general well being. Our human body is not made to be sedentary (over 3 million years of ancestry did not live this way) and ignoring exercise is not good for us. But if you want to lose weight, focus on your diet (eat smart, not
eat less).

Rise of Under 30 Heart Patients! How to save your own life and prevent "Cardiac Events"

Picture
Just read about "rise in under 30 heart patients". Bad News. Are you exposed to heart attack risk even with no outward sign ? I see what the newspaper says but I feel it is providing outdated "pre-formatted" solutions to what is a life or death situation.
"Let's blame cholesterol, obesity, stress and smoking and call it a day" is what most articles say, like the one I read. Or "Eat 5 servings of fruits and vegetables". Hey most Indians are already eating that, or at least 4 servings a day; I am not sure by adding a 5'th serving will shift the trend when it's gotten so bad !
The key problem is that the first heart attack or stroke comes unannounced. People often get stents in heart surgeries, to open blockages. The heart attacks often don't come from these known blockages. They come from when inflammation and plaque are being built up in your arteries and a piece breaks off, going anywhere. This is how someone gets a sudden stroke or heart attack. IF YOU WANT TO LIVE LONGER YOU HAVE TO STOP THESE BREAKAGES OF PLAQUE & THE FORMATION OF PLAQUE IN YOUR ARTERIES. Unfortunately most newspaper articles don't talk much about this.

If you wanna stop a heart attack here's what I say :
  1. Improve you HDL/Total Cholesterol ratio and HDL/Triglyceride ratio. Take HDL supplements regularly. Buy a "Supplement Box" and make sure you take these. This reduces plaque formation.
  2. Reduce your Homocysteine levels. Homocysteine causes ruptures in your artery which starts the plaque formation process. It is tested in a blood test. Get it below 7.
  3. If you have high stress, start MEDITATION. Getting angry at people and life is something you can shift and it's proven. I do TM meditation, it's super easy and it costs Rs 3000 to learn. DO IT. Stress trumps all the good things you can do for your body.
  4. Smoking. Yes it's bad. It will raise your chance of a heart attack by 60%. Reduce the harm if you can't quit. Buy an E-cigarette or chew the nicotine gum. Smoking causes Oxidative Stress on your system, a subject I will start covering when I open my new section on deep learning.

Weight Loss : "Blood Type Diet" review

Picture
I recently read a lot about the "Blood Type Diet" since my Brother in Law has been on it. He has lost weight and now weighs 89 kgs (height 5'10") and the dietician says he has plateaued and will not lose more weight. Sounds like he needs to lose a lot more. Ideal weight is 75 Kgs or less for him.
So here's what I found about about the Blood Type Diet :
"the philosophy of blood type is very obscure and lacking in science." from WebMd.
"significant lack of independent research" from healthline.
"Medical experts universally agree that the theory is nonsense" from WeightLossResources.

I am not so sure either. Cutting out food groups is never a good idea. I believe in the opposite that you should almost eat all food groups (meats can be excluded).
I am recommending to him to focus on H = N/C and to eat low Glycemic Index Foods.

Do you have any input on the matter ? Have you tried the "Blood Group Diet"?

Glucose Level Swings : How you can reduce them

It's nice to be back. Been in the mountains for 5 days without cell or internet ! Had a chance to read up on some new knowledge that you should really know : Glycemic Index.

Glycemic Index is the rate at which food will breakdown to glucose and raise sugar levels. It's  important for diabetics as per upcoming research. See (Mayo Clinic, Diabetes.org, and  Harvard). Why ? : Because you don't want to send your blood sugar levels on roller coaster rides. This is not good for your body, liver or pancreas.

Did you know White Rice will dissolve faster than Table Sugar ?? or that Fructose (fruit based sugar) dissolves a lot slower than table sugar. See my Dad has been told to avoid fruits as he's diabetic but he can eat rice. However, this science says cut down the rice and yes, he can eat fruits and gives a good reason that makes sense to me.

Here's a list of Glycemic Index of many food items from Harvard.

By eating more foods with low Glycemic Index I hope that his sugar levels will maintain and help his body by keeping it away from a glycemic roller coaster :) Expect more on this science as it is quite important for diabetics.

Protecting from Heart Attack : The New Kid on the block is ....

New research is indicating that something doctors do not normally monitor for cardiovascular health is Homocysteine.
Why is this important : Because fixing Homocysteine is easy and it can save your arteries from hardening. My article yesterday showed how safe Cholesterol levels were reduced below 200 (from 320) in late 70's. Well at the same time as managing Cholesterol for heart disease became the standard a professor at Harvard University was fired for his radical theories. Today he is celebrated as being ahead of his time, meet Dr.Kilmer McCully.
Thirty years ago, Kilmer McCully, M.D., discovered that cholesterol and clogged arteries are not the causes but rather the symptoms of heart disease. McCully's pioneering 1969 theory that linked homocysteine— an amino acid that accumulates in the blood—and heart disease was not embraced by the medical community. In fact, he was banished from Harvard University and Massachusetts General Hospital and denied a new position for more than two years because of his research.
To start this simple adjustment, first : get your level tested. Based on the book "What your doctor doesn't know about nutritional medicine may be killing you" I would recommend a score of below 7.
To Reduce Homocysteine levels Dr. Ray D. Strand suggests the following daily addition :
1000mcg folic acid
50 to 150 mcg of vitamin B12
25-50 mg of vitamin B6
Unlike Statins, the above have no side effects.
The conspiracy theory says that the Pharma Industry, by helping move safe Cholesterol levels from 320 to below 200 is making billions of dollars, whereas in reality a cheap addition of vitamins and folic acid can actually save your life. The Pharma industry makes no money when you take Vitamins B6, B12 and folic acid.
