For Diabetics taking care of your feet is extremely important. These guidelines are from our friend Dr. Bruce Pinkner who sees many diabetics in his Podiatry practice in New York, USA.

  • It is very important to take good care of your feet as a Diabetic
  • Diabetes can possibly have serious effects on your feet, such as
neuropathy, numbness and tingling and burning, and can lead to intense
infections that could lead to limb loss if not treated medically
  • Millions of people around the world suffer from Diabetes
  • Diabetes affects the whole body, but has specific implications for the feet
  • It is essential for you to inspect your feet daily, both tops and bottoms, and
look at the bottoms of your feet with a long-handled mirror (if possible)
  • If you find red spots, cuts, bruises, or cracks in the skin that do not heal
within 1-2 days, you must seek the help of a medical professional
  • Being overweight or obese increases your risk factors for Diabetes, so
weight loss and good nutrition are imperative for better health
  • If you suffer from frequent infections, dry and itchy skin, swelling, coldness to touch, inflammation, or cuts and bruises that are slow to heal, you need
    to seek medical attention
  • Diabetic foot conditions can worsen, leading to ulcers or wounds,
    infections, gangrene, and amputations
  • Your feet should be examined by a Podiatrist or Foot Specialist at least
    once or twice per year
  • Toenails and skin (calluses and corns) should be addressed by a Podiatrist
or Foot Specialist (do not cut them yourself for risk of causing infection)
  • You should avoid smoking cigarettes as it can adversely affect your
circulation and lead to unhealthy feet
